Splashing some water on her haggard face, she raised herself to admire the rising sun. The ochre rays worked tirelessly to dispel the burgandi, orange hue. Emerging from the brine waters, it never reflected the saltiness. Slowly the sun will scale to the heights and conquer its position in the vast expanse of sky, overpowering the last night's defeat. Maybe, purposefully every night the Sun God lets his sisters twinkle and shine in their own glory. The defeat is meaningful as he paves way for all his kinship to wallow in victory. How worthy is the win if you have none to celebrate with?  "Shaloooo.... " Bapu's call was louder than his speeding figure emerging towards Shalini from among the swaying corns about to harvest. The field looked every bit of gold mine decked up by the early rays.  "Shaloo... Your tickets for Chandigarh have arrived!" He spoke between gasping and panting heavily. Age had started showing its homecoming in his stamina but spirits were...

Fear mongers

The glass is broken to pieces. Terrified by my encounter, she rushes as if her rear was on fire. "HELP! There he is! Sumit please wake up fast!" Divya's cries are falling on deaf ears and are drowned in boisterous snoring. My prying eyes look at the terror in her eyes. How pretty she is, only if she doesn't threaten me with that killer weapon! Slowly, gradually, inch by inch I creep towards her. The beads of perspiration on her forehead, freeze on seeing me make the first move. "SUMMMMIIIIT!!!" She escapes out of my territory with quivering shrills. There is again eternal darkness.  "I tell you Sumit, if you don't call the pest control today, I'm off to my mom's place." Divya is threatening Sumit with dire consequences but my darling why are you banging the pots and pans. Not letting me catch a wink!  "Yes sweetie, I have called the agency but they say there is not enough labour." Sumit is my real sweetheart. How he keeps sta...

HUD HUD DABBHANG, DABBHANG...  The phone seeked attention boisterously. 'Man is known by the company he keeps' was a thing of past. Today, the ringtone told or more of confirmed what kind of personality Hemant was. Who better than Disha could tell a better story?  "Hello, yes? No, not today. Sir is flying to Singapore today by the 7pm flight with Samir Sir. Cancel his 6pm appointment." Disha directed the manager in being his boss's better pet. After all, she was best of all the domesticated keeps. Nodding and agreeing in unison to Hemant's idiosyncrasies. Not to mention, answering his calls and an ever ringing phone.  "Manju, is the upma ready? Keep a slice of lemon in the corner and not on the heap. Mind you it should be cut in a quarter and not half also deseeded." Manju was habituated to this heap was instructions from her mistress every morning yet everytime they were hurled at her she found herself immersed in them totally unable to keep afloat...

Friday word: Puppet The gold fish in the crystal swims elegantly occasionally nibbling on to the morning titbits sprinkled in the serene water. Dr. Saxena tries to play with her by sprinkling the wormy crush at different points and watch the little aquatic life run towards the bait. How she is dancing to the unseen strings of food! Foolish Fishy puppet!  "WAKE UP DUDE WAKE UP!! BEEP BEEP BEEP. I have beeped my lungs out and you are still in the lousy slumbers. Wake up you nerd, the gang has already begun the march. Now if you don't post an emoji or a forward you will be damn late. Then don't complain if they bully you by calling The Champu of the class. Not waking still? Wait I have another trick. Hey you the supercool Hitachi, just stop flapping your plastic wings. This Anuj Saxena must bring my social handles to life soon. Its been over five hours since midnight that he isn't on whatsapp. The last seen may create a scene." The apple i6 vibrates but to no avail....

The Alien Nine months

Image
Friday word: Alien The Alien Nine Months  The earthen pot hit the hard rock and struggled to gulp some water. After some ropy manoeuvres, it did get a mouthful. Slowly it rose in pride, happy about its accomplishment. Jharnaben tucked the pot on her sides and started a strenuous walk back home. As she entered the community of mud huts, pooping eyes from behind the wooden doors envied her potful trophy. Ignoring them all, Jharnaben made her way to a handful of chores that awaited her that morning. Pots and pans, children and the entire clan needed the H2O even if it meant a sip. With a growing pot belly, she could only manage to get one pot at a time. Placing one pot down( of course the other inbuild would have to wait for another 2months), she heaved a sigh of relief.    ------//////------      The white sands of Rann though of superior colour brought stark darkness and dryness in the eyes of the beholders. Deserted lives in the arid deserts! Mother e...

Catty Chase

Friday word: Chase               Catty Chase Mini sprang across the ferny bushes in quest of a safe, breathing space. It was a task to do so in an overtly crowded city. But not impossible either because she soon found a cosy knook just around the corner. She nestled herself purring heavily, half out of exhaustion and remaining fifty out of desperation. How long to run to save a petite life? Whom to live for -the fur and whiskers?  "Mini, Mini my darling where are you?"  Mini could smell the fish from the tone of her mistress. Today was Friday -Fishy Friday. This is what one needs to survive for after a good 5km chase. The city dogs ran like hounds, God knows what goes into their pedigree, she said sweet nothings to herself. Might as well think of them later after a hearty meal of fried salmon. Very diligently, she placed one paw on the treat and began to devour her Christmas feast by tearing into the snout of the salmon.  Licking, ...

Dairy daily

Friday word-Diary   Wow! The jasmine scent is still fresh. The flowers are dry yet they continue to give, and give till the last drop of nectar has been consumed. How beautiful she looked last night with the flowers adorning her long locks. It was one of the rarest occasion when she was allowed to let her black mane wander recklessly in the air. One occasion when she never inscribed on me. Marriages are such an extravaganza, poor soul couldn't find time. And when its your own, the conventionalities are exaggerated!! So be it. Whatever was the celebration yesterday, today for me is special. The kanjeevarams embrace me tight. Blue above and red below, the colours of life enclose me. Its better to be lying here than grumble on the hard teak table. Maybe as the youngest bride, she has been given this almirah all to herself. No wait. This is I guess, came as a dowry along with the golden dust and few copper utensils. But where is Kalpana today? Her day begins with my touch and end...
